Carsharing- car companies respond to changing ownership aspirations

cardrivers<img The leading luxury brands BMW and Mercedes have invested heavily in car sharing networks. In this new business model people do not own a car outright anymore but pay for the right to use a car for short journeys and pay either for each kilometre driven and/or time spend in the car. It is predicted that by 2020 Mercedes and BMW will generate more than 1 billion Euros each in revenues from their car sharing businesses in Germany (Gibbs 2013). In this car sharing model, the cars are owned by a separate firm and are ‘shared‘ among a number of people throughout the day. It is similar to traditional car rental, however the time span for each rental is usually shorter and may range from several hours to a few minutes. According to Zhao (2010) car sharing has also environmental benefits each shared vehicle is replacing 15 personally owned vehicles. Important for the success of car sharing is effective fleet management which includes the servicing of the cars and the ability to locate suitable vehicles via smart phones. Access to parking facilities at reasonable rates will also be important for the success of the model (Borgman). In Sydney, 15000 people have joined car sharing schemes and the City of Sydney has made 400 car parking spaces available for car sharing vehicles (cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au). According to a study conducted by SGS Economics (2012) car sharing has contributed 18.5 million savings for residents through the deferral of car purchases.

Young people less interesting in owning cars

Why are people less interested in owning cars and are driving less than their parents did? This question is an important issue for the automotive industry. Technology has had an impact here- why drive to meet friends when you can Skype or communicate via Facebook updates instead of driving through congested city streets and then trying to find a parking space? Other factors that impact on the purchase decision to buy a new or used car is the high price of petrol, the trend of young people to live in inner city areas with limited parking spaces and concerns about the environment (Read 2012).

Richard Read, (2012),Young People are driving much less (but not for the Reasons you think), accessed 12 September 2013 at The carconnection, June 18 2012, http://www.thecarconnection.com/news/1077028_young-people-are-driving-much-less-but-not-for-the-reasons-you-think

Deutsche Bank does not fund Barrier reef port expansion

Deutsche Bank has been accused of being involved in a number of scandals and has been cited as one of two banks ( besides Goldman Sachs) that have caused the financial crisis by the United States Senate  (Spiegel online www.spiegel.de/international/business/deutsche-bank-reputation-at-stake-amid-a-multitude-of-scandals-a-873544-3.html)

but somethings may be changing for the better; Deutsche Bank has refused to fund a port extension at the Great Barrier Reef

Is this a sign that corporate social responsibility may have a place at DB?

Car sharing in Europe ( automotive news)

“Both German automakers also predict that their mobility businesses will generate 1 billion euros each in annual revenues starting in 2020 as more people take advantage of renting cars by the minute for short journeys within crowded cities.”

Daimler’s Car2Go is available in 21 cities with a global fleet that is expected to grow to 10,000 cars this year from 6,100 last year. The fleet is made up of Smart ForTwos that generate 10 million rentals from half a million customers.

Car2Go is profitable in the three major cities used to launch the program in 2009 – Hamburg, Germany; Vienna, Austria; and Vancouver, Canada – said Robert Henrich, managing director of Daimler Mobility Services, who added that it takes three to four years for a city scheme to make money.

BMW’s Douglas said that a key to success in the sector is making sure that people can always find a car nearby. “It’s like the bus stop. If there’s a stop within 400 meters of their house, then people will use the bus. Same with car sharing. If they’ll find a car within 500 meters they’ll use it,” he said.

Bettina Wulf is suing Google

You may ask who is Bettina Wulf? She is the wife oft the ousted president of Germany ( they took advantage of their job- getting free upgrades and holidayed with influential people – so they were kicked out of the office). She is also writing a book.

I read on the Weekend in Spiegel about her courtcase,

google her and Google comes up with the following suggestions:

  • Bettina Wulf Escort
  • Bettina Wulf prostitute
  • Bettina Wulf Rotlicht millieu
  • and so on

there have been rumours in blocks that she was an escort- which she has denied and is suing now the media. She is suing Google because Google, based on search terms , these come up, not because there are any articles related to this!!! Think about the implications- If I search 1000 times for my name plus – ” award winning teacher” will that then automatically come up as suggestion?
